The size of the scrotum is highly correlated with the following traits:

  • Daily sperm production
  • Percent of progressively motile sperm
  • Fewer primary sperm defects
  • Epididymal sperm reserves
  • Age at puberty

Minimum Scrotal Circumference has been established for the use of Bull Breeding Soundness Evaluations. These are minimum standards, producers are highly recommended to understand the needs and goals for their heard(s). It is important to pay close attention to Scrotal Circumference at the time of bull selection.

Minimal Scrotal Circumference (established by the Society for Theriogenology)

Minimum Scrotal Circumference recommended by the Society for Theriogenology to classify bulls as “Satisfactory”.

Guidelines with higher standards used by many other veterinary associations in other countries.

Scrotal Circumference minimal standards by breed, used improving genetic standards and breeding soundness evaluations in many other countries including Western Canada.

Bull Producers can use the scrotal circumference of bulls at weaning time to cull bulls that may not meat minimal standards and to improve the genetic pool. This measurement is used to predict the scrotal size at 365 days.

The form below may be used to calculate the scrotal circumference from the time of weaning to 365 days of age
